This section is presently under construction. Thanks for your patience as
we add more information on Team Phaeton projects.
Popular Nonfiction
A key part of Phaeton Group's mission is bringing science and exploration
to a broad audience through engaging communication. A variety of books
and articles represent Team Phaeton's popular work covering subjects
from archaeology to space exploration, some of which are seen here.
Popular Fiction
Good popular writing requires more than an academic doctorate, since
communication skills are not necessarily emphasized in graduate departments
(indeed, they are sometimes discouraged). To learn popular communication
from the best people in the business, Phaeton's David West Reynolds
took a position in marketing and communications at George Lucas' Skywalker
Ranch for two years, where he also became a Lucasfilm author. Reynolds
continues to write Star Wars books for Lucasfilm, treating the fantasy
world of Star Wars as "a culture from another time and place to explore."
Reynolds' efforts in this non-academic field gave the archaeologist
a New York Times #1 best-seller with the Star Wars Episode I Visual
Dictionary. "So I accomplished what I set out to do in that area,"
Reynolds says. "My first efforts after that book were to turn the
skills Lucasfilm had taught me to non-fiction subjects. My APOLLO
book [Harcourt, 2002] is the first result of this experiment in cross-pollination."
Meanwhile, Reynolds' painstaking yet lively approach to Star Wars
arcana has made him a "fan favorite" in the words of Amazon.com.
Expeditions
The pursuit of field science takes Phaeton Group around the world
on exciting missions of discovery, from searching for new dinosaur
species in Africa to probing the Inca ruins of Peru. We'll have more
information here soon.
Photography
Phaeton photographers capture high-quality images for scientific,
artistic, and commercial applications, from photos for best-selling
books to scientific biological documentation. This section will present
a selection of Phaeton Group photographic work, such as Jack Bobo's
images of the fantastic ruined city of Gedi in the jungles of East
Africa. Images from this unique set first appeared in Archaeology
magazine in 2001, and have subsequently been published by World Book
Encyclopedia as well.
Art & Fabrications
Phaeton Group members create a great variety of artworks for museums,
professionals, and public clients, including everything from academic
illustration and museum models to a life-size scientific dinosaur
skeleton. Dan Erickson is our most active scientific artist, best
known for his monstrous prehistoric fish sculptures, with one sixteen-foot
specimen hanging in the American Museum of Natural History in New
York City. We'll soon offer more information about Phaeton Art and
Fabrications here.
