Astronauts: Only Exploration Justifies the Cost and Risk
SPRINGFIELD, VA, Dec. 2003--Look for Dr. Reynolds' latest article, the lead feature in the Nov./Dec. issue of SPACE TIMES, the magazine of the American Astronautical Society. "Astronauts: Only Exploration Justifies the Cost and Risk" argues against the space shuttle "busy work" paradigm that has kept NASA astronauts far from the frontier of exploration for over 30 years. "I believe," says Dr. Reynolds, "that NASA should re-adopt the Apollo-era standard for astronaut missions: if we are not going higher and farther, we should not be sending people into space at all." President Bush's new space initiative came as a welcome surprise to us here at Phaeton HQ. The new plan closely accords with Reynolds' recommendations. "I am gratified that the President is making some strong decisions and giving NASA some of the direction and vision it has sorely lacked since it got rid of Wernher von Braun in the early 1970s."

Phaeton Attends Satellite Launch
VANDENBERG AIR FORCE BASE, Jan. 2003--NASA's space launch facilities in Florida are world-famous, but California's counterpart launch operation sends satellites into space as well. Phaeton's director examined this facility on a mission to gather research for our new book called "Gateways to Space," forthcoming from Firefly Books. "The space launch complexes at Vandenberg are comparatively overlooked by the public," says Dr. Reynolds, "but there is a great deal of capability here. The Air Force even built its own space shuttle launch facility, though it was never used. Once I have written all this up for 'Gateways to Space,' I think we'll need to post a feature on PhaetonGroup.com about Vandenberg's rocket pads, especially the facilities for the launch of Boeing's Delta II rockets, the same kind that send space probes to Mars. Boeing has been very helpful in affording us a close look at this excellent operation."

Reynolds addresses the Inside Edge Foundation for Education
ORANGE COUNTY, CALIFORNIA Nov. 6, 2002--The Inside Edge Foundation For Education hosted Phaeton's Dr. David West Reynolds for a lecture about the Apollo Moon landings, and this inspirational 45-minute presentation will be available online via the group's website for a limited time. The presentation may be viewed as a slide show, or as a limited-motion video stream for broadband users. "The greatest value of the Apollo achievement," said Reynolds, "was that we destroyed the word 'impossible.' The Moon landings are a beacon to remind us that both individually and as a nation, we can do anything if we determine to do it." The Inside Edge 2002 Speaker List

DENVER, Dec. 2002--Phaeton Anthropology Specialist Prof. Mark Spencer, of the University of Colorado at Denver, has just accepted a position as Vice-President for the education organization Colorado Citizens For Science. The group seeks to promote better science teaching in schools, especially evolution. Spencer is a natural choice for the job. A specialist in the study of evolution, he has worked for over ten years with the evidence of human development, and he is highly regarded as a teacher as well. We congratulate Mark on this position and look forward to the results of his efforts with CCFS.
